Ladies and gentleman lend me your ears! For today we will deal with one of the world’s most grueling tourneys!
It challenges the body, the mind and most certainly the soul. For those who participate spend not merely months but rather years training to perfect their style, perfect their gait and perfect their minds in preparation for this event. What is this gruesome event that we speak of? Why the Comrades Marathon of course!
Now dear readers I know we’ve chatted about the Comrades before, I just felt we needed to revisit this event, to really get down to the nitty-gritty details and well honestly what I find to be the draw card of this race.
I’m not sure if it’s the excitement of the pre-race build-up or maybe it’s the freedom that comes with running but every year when I sit down to watch I always vow that the next year will be my Comrades year. Has this happened? No. Definitely not.
I can proudly say that I have never given in to these delusions of grandeur! Maybe because I lack the motivation it requires, and well let’s be honest I truly do not want to run that distance, it does not take away from the fact that I truly do admire those who participate.
In researching for this blog I have found some of the most amazing stories! In saying that I think I have found the key right there. This is what draws you in and calls to you. The humanity. Unrivaled by any other sporting event!
Whilst I’ve been known to shed a slight tear or two whilst celebrating the victory of my favourite football team, never had it reduced me to tears in the way the Comrades has. As cut of time draws closer and closer the sheer hope and struggle against the adversity of this race is apparent to all and whether you’re watching on TV or standing along the side lines one cannot help but be moved.
Whether you participate in this great race, run for yourself or merely try to take a walk, we at Optima Holidays want to salute you. It takes an enormous amount of will power to strive the way we constantly do and we want to take this moment to appreciate all of you, our fellow comrades.
