Oppie Koppie Sweet Thing!
So unless you’ve been in hiding from the mob, taking a break from civilization or you’re an Avenger trying not to reveal your true identity, then you have certainly heard of South Africa’s premier music festival Oppi Koppi!
Now for a little bit of a history lesson, Oppi Koppi began in 1994 in Limpopo’s mining town of Northam. The name itself means “on a hill”, which is the venue for the Sipho Gumede stage which house the latest in South African hip-hop.
At its inception the festival had some 27 bands performing and hand full of SA rock enthusiasts. Year by year this festival as grown to incorporate multiple stages featuring various types of music and has an audience of anything between 5000 – 15,000 people!
There are a multitude of acts that perform across the genre spectrum, everything from rock and hip-hop to jazz, ska, folk, RnB, kwaito, traditional and so much more.
This year’s festival has been inspired by the Van Morrison song, if you’ll notice each year the festival takes on a different theme.
