Ratha-yatra, or the Festival of Chariots, is a joyous event celebrated for thousands of years in the Indian holy city of Jagannatha Puri, and now celebrated in Durban and more recently by Hare Krishna devotees in cities around the world. Another name for Krishna, Jagannatha refers to the ecstatic form of the Lord with large eyes and rugged features who is carried on a gigantic chariot during this festival (and worshiped in an ancient temple at the center of Jagannath Puri). A Very South African Christmas

Here in South Africa, we do Christmas a little different.  We don’t have a ‘White Christmas’, with land covered in snow, and Santa on a Sled.  Here, we have Santa driving a Land Rover with his Reindeer huddled in the back, all trying to steal a chance at flapping their tongues in the wind.

Instead of roast Chicken or Turkey and Cranberry sauce, we Braai Chops and Wors with a side dish of Salad Greens, Baked Beans, Spicey Curry dishes, Pap and freshly baked rolls. (more…)
